A watch is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds, conditions that make outside preparations difficult or dangerous. A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours. Interests elsewhere in the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument should monitor the progress of Lala. Warnings may be require for portions of this area later today. DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 1100 AM HST (2100 UTC), the center of Hurricane Lala was located near latitude 20.4 North, longitude 168.1 West. Lala is moving toward the west near 9 mph (15 km/h), and this motion is expected to continue today. A turn toward the west-northwest then northwest is forecast tonight and Wednesday, followed by a turn toward the north on Thursday. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near near 105 mph (165 km/h) with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is possible during the next day or so, and Lala is expected to become a major hurricane later today or tonight. Subsequently, Lala is expected to remain a hurricane for the next several days. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 970 mb (28.65 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- WIND: Hurricane conditions are possible in the Hurricane Watch area by Thursday, with tropical storm conditions possible by Wednesday night. Tropical storm conditions are possible in the Tropical Storm Watch area by Thursday. SURF: Large surf associated with Lala will affect the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument beginning early Wednesday.
